How to Create Lists in the DIY Fly Fishing Mobile App

Lists are a DIY Fly Fishing mobile app Pro feature that you can use to plan fishing trips or just keep tabs of your favorite fishing spots.

For example, let’s create a List for a trip to fish in Montana.

Step 1

Create a new List by tapping on the Collections tab.

Step 2

Tap the + button and give your list a name.

Step 3

You will now see a new empty List named “Montana”.

Step 4

Search for locations you would like to add to your list. Or just tap any map marker to add that location to the map. Here, let’s add the Madison River to our trip.

Step 5

On the location detail page, tap the bookmark button in the top right corner.

Step 6

Choose the List you would like to add the location to. In this example, we will select Montana.

Step 7

Returning to your Lists on the Collection tab, you will see we added one new location.

Step 8

The Montana List button to see the locations we have added so far. Let’s add some more.

Step 9

We might want to also fish the Gallatin River on our trip, but we hear the River is still running high due to spring run-off. Let’s add a USGS stream gauge for the Gallatin River so we can quickly see what condition the river is in.

  1. Search for the Gallatin River
  2. Open the location detail page
  3. Tap the bookmark in upper right corner
  4. Add to Montana List

Step 10

What’s a fishing trip without hitting a brew pub after a hard day on the water? Let’s find one and add it to our Montana List. I heard Bozeman Brewing is pretty good.

Let’s check it out and add it to our Montana trip List as a Waypoint.

What’s a Waypoint? They are custom markers you can add to the map. Just click the big + plus button in the lower left corner on any screen.

We have a separate Waypoint tutorial on how to use them if you are not sure how.

Step 11

  1. Tap the Waypoint + button
  2. Search for Bozeman Brewing
  3. Tap search result for Bozeman Brewing Company

Step 12

You can give Waypoints any name you like, add a description and assign a waypoint category. So for our example, let’s use:

  1. Name = Bozeman Brewing Company
  2. Description = Local Brewery
  3. Waypoint Type = Pub
  4. Save!

Step 13

Once your new Waypoint shows up on the map…

  1. Tap the marker to open the location detail page
  2. Tap the bookmark in the upper right corner
  3. Select Montana

(The process is the same as illustrated in Steps 5 & 6 above.)

Step 14

Ok, let’s recap and see how our Montana trip List is coming along. Head back over to Collections and you’ll see our Montana List now has a few locations saved to it.

Step 15

Tap the Montana button and you can see all the locations we have added so far. Add as many as you like as you continue to plan your trip. Life is short, so don’t forget those brew pubs!

Step 16

Now for the fun part! Click the Map button to see all your trip locations on the map. This is a great way to filter out all other map locations and just see the ones you are planning to check out.

Rinse and repeat the process to add as many locations to your List as you like.

Keep in mind that you can also add new markers during the trip as conditions change, or if you just want to remember a particular spot or landmark.

(Hint: Adding Waypoints to your List is very helpful if you are out with a guide and want to remember how to get back to that secret spot they took you!)

So that’s how to use Lists to plan your next fly fishing trip!
