Fly Fishing Near Denver, Colorado: Best Spots, Hatches & Access
Few major American cities sit closer to quality trout water than Denver. Within an hour of downtown you can be working a Blue-Winged Olive hatch on the South Platte at Deckers, picking apart the technical Gold Medal water of Cheesman Canyon, or high-sticking pocket water in Clear Creek. Add year-round tailwater options and a half-dozen freestone creeks in the foothills, and the Denver metro might be the best home base for a fly angler in the country.
Take this guide on the water — get turn-by-turn directions to every spot below with the DIY Fly Fishing app:
Best Fly Fishing Waters Near Denver
South Platte River at Deckers (about 1 hour southwest) — Classic Colorado tailwater fishing with rainbows and browns that see a lot of flies. Midges and BWOs most of the year; gets crowded on weekends, so go early or go midweek.
Cheesman Canyon (about 1 hour southwest) — Three miles of Gold Medal catch-and-release water below Cheesman Reservoir. Technical, demanding, and home to some of the biggest trout near Denver. Artificial flies and lures only.
Clear Creek (about 35 minutes west) — Freestone creek along the I-70 corridor with easy roadside access. Browns, rainbows, and brookies in pocket water that fishes well with attractor dries in summer.
Bear Creek (about 30 minutes west) — Smaller foothill creek with wild browns and excellent dry-fly water. A good pick when you want solitude without a long drive.
South Platte below Chatfield Reservoir (about 25 minutes south) — The Denver winter standby. This tailwater stays open and fishable when freestones freeze up; think midges and small nymphs on light tippet.
Cherry Creek (about 20 minutes southeast) — Urban creek with trout and warmwater species. Not wilderness, but hard to beat for an after-work session close to the city.
Eleven Mile Canyon (about 1.5 hours southwest) — Gold Medal water worth the drive. Stunning canyon scenery and a legitimate shot at a trophy brown on streamers in the fall.
When to Fish: Denver-Area Seasonality
- Winter (December–February): Tailwaters are the game — Deckers and the South Platte below Chatfield fish all winter on midges. Low, clear water and light tippet.
- Spring (March–May): Pre-runoff is prime. BWOs on overcast days, hungry post-winter trout. Runoff typically hits mid-May through June, so watch flows.
- Summer (July–August): Post-runoff, everything is on the table — PMDs, caddis, terrestrials. Head for higher elevation creeks on hot afternoons.
- Fall (September–November): Streamer season. Browns turn aggressive before the spawn, and fall BWOs bring fish to the surface on mild days.
What You’ll Catch
Rainbow trout and brown trout are the mainstays — wild browns in most of the foothill creeks. Cutthroat trout show up in headwater stretches, and brook trout color the highest creeks. Handle cutthroats with extra care and keep them wet.
Denver-Area Fly Fishing Regulations
Colorado fishing regulations are set by Colorado Parks & Wildlife — check the current CPW fishing regulations before every trip. Notable special regulations near Denver include the flies-and-lures-only, catch-and-release rules in Cheesman Canyon and Gold Medal designations on several stretches. Rules change, so verify the water you’re fishing.
Getting There & Access
Most of the best water sits 30 to 60 minutes from downtown Denver. Take I-70 west for Clear Creek, US-285 southwest for Deckers and Cheesman Canyon, and Santa Fe Drive south for the Chatfield tailwater. Much of it is roadside access; the canyon stretches reward a short hike. Fish weekdays when you can — weekend crowds are the norm within an hour of the city.
